Today's Heartbeat: The Peoria 60

In a quiet neighborhood in Peoria, Arizona, a silence had been masking a crisis. For months, sixty dogs were living behind closed doors in a home described by officials as "extremely unsanitary." These animals had no way to ask for help, their plight hidden from the world until a coordinated effort by local police and animal advocates broke the silence.

On February 12, 2026, the Peoria Police Department announced a major victory. Through a partnership with PACC911 (Phoenix Animal Care Coalition), a network of over 140 animal welfare partners was activated. While the scale of the rescue was daunting—especially with shelters already at maximum capacity—the community refused to look away.

Six local rescue partners, including Almost There Rescue and Help A Dog Smile, stepped up immediately. Despite having "no room," they pivoted their entire operations to make space. Because of this massive collective effort, fifty-two of the sixty dogs have already been placed in rescues or adopted. The remaining eight are scheduled to move to safety tomorrow.

"It takes a village... Every animal agency is working hard, but it is not enough because there are so many that can't get into rescues."Bari Mears, President of PACC911

Your Task

The "Peoria 60" are safe because people chose to listen to a silence that didn't feel right. Heroism today isn't just about the rescue—it's about the capacity to rescue.

This weekend, help expand the safety net. Call your local shelter and ask about their "Emergency Foster" list. You don't have to commit to months of care; just being a name on a list for a "crisis weekend" allows shelters to say "Yes" to the next urgent rescue. If you can’t foster, consider a "Village Donation" of $10 to a local rescue coalition to help cover the medical intake of animals coming from hoarding situations.
